CHARACTER
Name: Mia Fey
Canon: Ace Attorney series
Age: 24
Timeline: After case 3-1: Turnabout Memories
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: n/a
Personality:
As a defense attorney, Mia is known for her absolute belief in her clients. This is preceded by an absolute belief in her own mother.
As a spirit medium of the legendary Kurain Village, Mia's mother (Misty Fey) was consulted on an infamous murder case known as the DL-6 incident. When Misty was given inaccurate information by a spirit she consulted, she was pronounced to be a fraud and fled from the public eye. Mia, as the heir to the Kurain Village, was slated to inherit the village and become its master. Instead, she left the village to become a lawyer, hoping to discover the truth behind the DL-6 Incident and clear her mother's name.
Mia approaches everything in her life with a similar drive, born of her unwavering faith in those she cares for, as well as a generous dash of impulsiveness. After all, if you believe in something with all of your heart, what's to keep you from charging ahead at full speed? Luckily, this tends to work out in Mia's favour. In court she has even occasionally gone so far as to bluff knowing more than she does to buy time, but when it comes time to show her cards, Mia almost invariably has her facts straight. This is largely due to her immaculate attention to detail. One look at Mia's office is enough to paint a clear picture of her out-of-court habits: innumerable files are maintained impeccably, as are shelves upon shelves of reference books. The only place her office is perhaps lacking is in her outdated model of computer, used solely for the odd necessary e-mail -- Mia has an old-fashioned streak that makes her far more likely to be found with her nose in a book than surfing the net.
Perhaps the place Mia Fey shines most is in a place of mentorship. Five years into her legal career, Mia became a friend and guide to former client Phoenix Wright, himself an aspiring defense attorney. She often encouraged Phoenix in her own tried-and-true methods in the courtroom, particularly thinking outside of the box and turning around every issue to look at it from another angle. Mia could, in most instances, be seen as something of a benevolent guardian angel, calm and encouraging. However, she is also capable of dishing out tough love. When Phoenix showed signs of wanting to give up or run away, Mia's stern and uncompromising side would kick in. She equates believing in the client and believing in oneself, and will not stand for anything less
Even after her death, Mia's nature does not change. When channelled by one of the other Feys, she continues to appear in and out of court as a steadfast ally and support. She lends her help through gentle prompting, never spelling out an answer for Phoenix, but reminding him that he has it in him to find the truth for himself. It is very possible that she sees her own younger self in Phoenix, and wants to see him grow into the kind of confidence that she herself found over the years.
At Mia's currently selected canon point, she has considerably less experience under her belt, only having taken on two cases by herself. She carries an understandable level of hesitancy, and tends to demonstrate this physically -- on one occasion grabbing her mentor by his lapels and shoutingly insisting that she was calm.
Ultimately, Mia is a compassionate individual, driven as much by her heart as by her intellect. Her passions in life (and in death) are aimed squarely at the good of others. Her ambition to become a lawyer was for the sake of her mother and her family's name. Her adventures in the courtroom consisted of countless hours being poured into saving each and every client she took on. Her mentoring of Phoenix Wright was aimed at helping him to reach his full potential. Perhaps Mia is only lacking in taking on the elusive case of helping herself.
Background:
In addition to the family history accounted above, a detailed look at Mia's background can be found at the Ace Attorney wiki, here.
Abilities:
Most notably, Mia is said to harness great spiritual powers. Using the Kurain channelling technique, she has the ability to act as a medium to the dead. When this ability is used, the medium's physical appearance shifts to take on characteristics of the channelled spirit, such as body shape and voice. Though Mia is never actually pictured using this ability in canon, it is made clear that she is capable of it, and in fact, particularly gifted in it.
Clearly, Mia has several years of legal study and practice under her belt. She understands the ins and outs of the courtroom very well, heads up her own practice, and has an excellent record in winning "not guity" verdicts for her clients.
First Person:
[Mia departs from the train, her heels clicking against the ground in a hesitant staccato.
If she's being honest with herself, she's not sure why she's here right now. But her gut tells her there's a reason she got off that train, and she's learned to trust her gut. Still, there's something that feels different about this.
She takes a deep breath and steels herself. Okay, what are the facts? She's never been here before. But something about it seems... not inviting exactly, but enticing. Bewitching, almost.
What else has changed? Well, for starters, she seems to have acquired something. She brushes her fingers delicately over the surface of the pocket watch, looking for any telling details. Sure enough, it, like the city, is completely unfamiliar to her.
So if it's not the somewhere or the something, could it be a someone she's here for?
With a little fiddling, she manages to switch on the audio function, and introduces herself the same way she would as a witness on the stand.]
My name is Mia Fey. Defense Attorney.
Third Person:
April 11, 10:00 AM
District Court
Courtroom No. 2
Mia only vaguely hears the judge calling the court into session. Her throat felt tight, and she had the strangest sensation of being submerged in water.
Get it together, Mia, she urged herself. She splayed the fingers of her inconveniently sweaty hands behind the defendant stand and looked straight forward. If nothing else, she knew how to appear calm and collected.
"The defense is ready, Your Honor!" She gulped back a wince -- that definitely came out a little more forceful than she had intended. She could almost feel her ears pop under the pressure.
"...Ms. Mia Fey, was it?" Damn, she'd zoned out for a moment, and the judge was addressing her now. He wore a peculiar look of scrutiny. Rather than being thrown off, however, Mia grew indignant. Why the odd look? She channelled that into something solid, palpable. She had every right to be here. She could do this. Well, probably.
"Y-Yes, Your Honor. Is there a problem?"
"I was under the impression that Marvin Grossberg was to be leading the defense."
Mia glanced sideways at Mr. Grossberg, who had only minutes ago proclaimed her to not have the "temperament" to be a lawyer. Grossberg, for all his years of experience, had gained no sense of faith. Hadn't she proven herself worthy of it?
If she could, she would say, This is my case, Your Honor, and that's all there is to it. Instead she faltered, and half-heard herself giving some excuse about Mr. Grossberg having an accident.
"You're just a rookie," the judge said. "Are you sure you can really handle this?"
Indignation turned to power in her throat. Her eyebrows turned down, and she rolled back her shoulders. This is your moment, Mia.
She slammed both palms down on the stand emphatically. "Of course, Your Honor!"
Was that too much? She bit her lip. "...I think."
